OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Larsen's
beach is totally rustic. There are no homes
or commercial developments to be seen.
This
narrow, sandy beach extends seemingly
forever through a very secluded area.
Rolling hills, covered with small
trees
and scrub form the backdrop. A protecting
reef provides excellent swimming and fishing
& snorkeling.
The beach is rocky in spots, but if you are
looking for that ideal place to get away
from everything and everyone, Larsen's beach
may be your place.
The reef is very close to the shore which
means you have to be careful where you
swim.
Be
sure to note the location of channels
entering the ocean as you make your way
down; the currents near these channels are
often swift and should be avoided.
At the same time this
means the whole area is great for
snorkeling. And the 2+ miles is excellent
for beach combing. If you're looking for
seclusion, this beach is usually totally
void of other people. You may see 2 or 3
other groups of people in the whole 2 miles
expanse; some may be illegally camping
while others may be seeking a quiet
au-natural afternoon getaway. You can walk
northwards to a small trickling stream,
which is dry in the summer. If your feet
are tough (the sand is coarse) the northern
end has a fun spot with rocks and trees to
climb and a makeshift outdoor camp. |

DIRECTIONS |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Head east
from Princeville on highway 56. Take Koolau
Road as it branches off route 56 near the 20
mile marker [about 8 miles]. Go 1.2 miles
on the paved road miles to a sugar cane
road on the left. You'll immediately have a
choice of several roads. Take the hard left
and go 1 mile to the beach parking. Hike
through the gate and down the road for about
1/2 mile until you come to the beach which
is on your left. The path is usually very
navigable. Do not leave valuables in your
car. |

PLEASE NOTE |
|
| |
|
|
| |
While
Hawaii's beaches can bring much enjoyment,
it is always a good practice to use common
sense while visiting them. Please be aware
of the wave & wind conditions before going
into the water. Mornings are usually best
for swimming, snorkeling or diving. Have
respect for the strength of the waves and be
aware that high surf can come up at any
time. NEVER turn your back to the ocean.
Be careful when exploring any rocky
shorelines. Waves can crash on the rocks and
knock you over easily, and the rocks may
also be sharp when walking on them.
When snorkeling or scuba diving, please have
respect for ocean life, and remember that
the coral reef is alive too. Avoid standing
on or touching if at all possible. |
